Abstract
Ultra-nationalist groups have become increasingly noticeable in Georgia in recent years. In the name of traditions and “saving the nation” they organise violent protest rallies and spread hate speech. Accordingly, they gain pretty much media coverage.
Ultra-nationalist groups actively use social networks for self-organising and spreading their ideology. Wherethrough, number of internet users and online news is distinctively increasing in recent years, it’s very important to research what kind of influence they have upon the setting agenda in online media.
The goal of the research is to analyze based on the agenda setting theory, how ultra-nationalist groups’ activities reflect on online media, if online media have any strategy and if so, how it works.
for researching these topics quantitative (content analyzes) and qualitative (deep interviews) methods have been used. for content analyzes 5 most popular online news outlets (On.ge, Tabula.ge, Marshalpress.ge, Reportiori.ge and Interpressnews.ge) have been selected, also deep interviews have been conducted with 3 editors. 2 of them declined to participate in the research.
