Abstract
This thesis evaluates the issues related to teaching of foreign language for specific purposes (faculty European language) in higher educational institutions of Georgia. The term - foreign language for specific purposes (LSP) implies specialized professional language for undergraduate students, who study the second language as a faculty discipline. This thesis turns the proven paradigm upside down. Taking into consideration the existing situation, within the higher educational process, majority of undergraduate students already have the knowledge of basic foreign language and the saturation of the learning process with directly by LSP teaching is crucially important. Therefore, teaching of general foreign language will fail to be effective in terms of professional development and/or motivation of the students, as the approach proposed in this thesis. Within the frames of learning and teaching of a foreign language, the challenges for undergraduate students regarding the prerequisite of optional subjects (foreign language B1) have been identified, that explains the fact that for the purposes of evaluation of this work, research on the teaching practice of language for specific purposes at the undergraduate level was selected. Undergraduate students at universities who choose a compulsory foreign language discipline and complete the study component, are not able to choose field subjects in the next (III, IV) semester, since the prerequisite for various subjects is the B1 level for foreign language. The trend indicates that students are not able to use a foreign language in a real environment and as a result, interest in learning disappears, which in turn, affects the academic performance as well. The thesis refers to the research on the teaching of language for specific purposes in higher educational institutions in Georgia and refers to the evaluation of the needs of specialized foreign language elements.
The issue is considered in three dimensions, on the one hand, foreign language teachers of higher education institutions, specialized subject teachers – who teach various subjects, and, in some cases, their subject prerequisite is B1 level of foreign language and the third undergraduate students, who study a foreign language as a faculty discipline. Two approaches have been taken into consideration, i.e., on the one hand, reliable representative data, which were determined by a quantitative survey, and on the other hand, the qualitative (individual questions) interviews, that gave a more in-depth look at the mentioned issue. Herewith, an overview of the important aspects of the language for specific purposes is presented, as well as the chronological development of German language teaching and the existing situation in terms of teaching of language for specific purposes.
