Abstract
This essay analyzes the ways in which the post-industrial, post- Soviet identity of the city evolves. In this article, I look at societal changes through the lens of urban anthropology. Following the creation of the Soviet Union, industrial growth dominated urban areas in Georgia. Cities with a large concentration of heavy industrial factories lost their significance and function with the fall of state socialism. As a result, it trapped the city's identity between the past and an uncertain future. The "quest for identity" in the newly constituted state of Georgia had an impact on the industrial city of Zestaponi as well. The article's primary questions are: what does Zestaponi signify in post-industrial life? What is its role and identity in contemporary Georgian society? The research's actuality is guided by the need to understand the issues of post-Socialist transition as well as the need to comprehend how the industrial city of Zestaponi transformed its sociocultural image in conjunction with evolving political realities. The essay discusses post-industrial city challenges as well as the ramifications of post-Soviet urban development.
