Abstract
National identity, as a product of modern age, appeared around nineteenth century, and became
important determinant of political and social actions for public. Identity answers the question
about who is the subject, actor; it provides the representation of the surroundings and the
person itself. Identity determines the possibility of full adaptation, as it establishes the role of
subjects involved in social interaction. This thesis aims to demonstrate how Abkhazian
nationalism, formed on the basis of Abkhazian national identity, is revealed in everyday life and
what is its impact on the existing relations between Georgians and Abkhazians living in
Abkhazia.
The study revealed that Abkhazians represent their national identity relying on history and
traditions. This gives them the common content and shared ideas that are passed on to the next
generation and which determines Abkhazian national identity. Representations about collective
past contribute to the unification of the group.
According to the analysis, we can say that Abkhazian nationalism is a form of “hot” nationalism
and plays important role in the everyday life of Abkhazians. Despite the fact, that the
aspirations of Abkhazian nationalists were achieved and Abkhazia was separated from Georgia,
their national sentiments still haven’t faded. On the contrary, it was intensified.
As for the everyday relations between Georgians and Abkhazians, it carries an ambivalent
character: Georgian national sentiments are repressed by Abkhazian national sentiments and
this in turn causes its intensification. As a result, these antagonistic national sentiments cause
constant tension in this land.
