Abstract
The Master’s Thesis analyzes the history of the development of sports journalism in Georgia
and its modern state. The study uses social research methods - discourse analysis and content
analysis. It should be noted that the research is interdisciplinary in nature. Sports journalism is
analyzed from different angels- journalism history and theory, as well as from the angle of culture.
Special attention is paid to the theoretical aspects of contemporary media studies, as well as trends
in journalism in the context of globalization. Moreover, some important concepts are pinpointed -
convergence, multimedia, transmedia, hypertextuality, etc. The paper analysis "new media" and the
modern state of internet media development and future prospects. The study shows that these
categories are important and relevant media systems in Georgia and in the world, generally.
The thesis analysis the sport as a public and socio-cultural phenomenon and focuses on the
history of its establishment on the example of the world and Georgia. The role of sport and sports
journalism in the context of nationalism and identity are especially interesting nowadays. Such
approach indicated that sports and sports journalism in Georgia reflected the tendencies of
nationalism too. The research also provides special attention to the development of sports
journalism in Georgia, Georgian sports editions as well as print and online editions.
Finally, within the framework of the Master’s Thesis, a special survey was conducted, 5
respondents (sports journalists, media manager, president of the federation, etc.) were interviewed.
The interviews are analyzed with the help of the content analysis method and in the end conclusions
are proposed.
