Abstract
The aim of teaching natural sciences is to provide students with an opportunity to get to know and internalize the world and feel the responsibility towards themselves, society and environment. Ecological studies show that the environmental awareness of the population of Georgia is not very high. Demonstrating the ecological knowledge and skills gained by students at the basic and secondary levels using different teaching methods, establishing the level of the environmental awareness amongst the students with the help of quantitative research and all necessary events to increase this awareness are vital issues today.
The objectives of the scholarly work are to plan the research, to establish the level of the environmental awareness among the basic and secondary level students; to search, classify and record data; to discuss and prepare conclusions; to study respondents’ answers and to analyze results using the structural questionnaire. In case of revealing the low environmental awareness, it is essential to activate teachers’ work via extracurricular activities such as school trips, school projects, eco clubs, olympiads and so on, to actively involve students in the learning process.
Research objects: 100 students from four schools in Terjola district who state their own level of environmental knowledge answering the structural questionnaire.
Research methods used: quantitative research of the middle and secondary level schoolchildren on the environmental awareness; extracurricular teaching methods: excursions, school projects, eco clubs etc.; the search for the Internet materials.
