The main research question of the thesis Radicalization and Recruitment Ways of Georgian Citizens by Islamic Caliphate, written by Giorgi Goguadze is how the Islamic State managed to radicalize and recruit the citizens of Georgia. The research aims to study, considering the specific parameter and factor, the causes, objectives and forms behind the fact of the citizens of Georgia joining the terrorist organization. How the European citizens were recruited and radicalized represents yet another relevant question for the thesis. A hypothetical answer to the research question has been formulated – it implies that apart from the ideological, religious, social and economic factors, the propaganda conducted by ISIS, including the efficient use of social media, played an important role in the process of recruitment and radicalization of the citizens of Georgia. The given thesis offers a communication/propaganda perspective with the aim of an in-depth analysis of the issue.
The thesis employs Harold Lasswell’s model of communication. Lasswell tries to explain how and through which channels the propaganda and processed messages affect people.
During the research stage, the thesis was based on qualitative research method. Besides a desk research and a comprehensive literature analysis, activities on the field as well as indepth interviews with public and special designation institution representatives have also been carried out.
