Personal Name „Nask’ida“ in Eastern Georgia

Abstract
The article discusses various reasons of giving or avoiding the names for children. Georgian ethnographic data are richly displaying the approved practices. Based on ethnographic materials, the common tradition of giving the name „Nask’ida!“ // „Nak’ida“ (which in Georgian means „bought”) in East Georgia is analyzed in the article. The article analyzes the common tradition of giving this name, which is connected to the beliefs and perceptions. When there was a threat of loosing a baby, the family was pretending to sell the child and thus to protect his/her life. The article argues the different skills of carrying out the rituals. The long-standing, empirical folk knowledge highlights that the everyday practices are elaborated based on the century long experiences and are having logical explanations
