Abstract
Southwest Georgia is the region where the cradle of Georgian statehood was established, Christianity spread and the national culture reached the highest peak. In the 70-s of the 16th century, the Ottomans conquered Georgia and made it part of their empire. The "Ottoman period" began, which lasted for three centuries.
Politically, economically and religiously, the population of Adjara, which was under Ottoman rule, never accepted the domination of foreigners. Part of the population was forcibly converted to Islam, but they did not lose their national identity. They fought to free themselves from national independence and Ottoman domination, which they were able to do in the 70-s of the XIX century.
