The aim of the research was to identify the challenges in pediatric oncology in the dimension
of social work in Georgia as well as define the importance and the role of making social work more
active in this field. The study is based on in-depth interviews conducted by the author with the
family members of oncologist patients (children) and doctors working in this area.
The research made by the author responded to three main questions: what are the needs in
pediatric oncology where the involvement of social work due to its
main characteristics of the profession would be reasonable? What kind of support do the family
members expect from a social worker? And how can the involvement of a social worker help the
attending doctor in managing the process of treatment and rehabilitation?
The research confirmed the following hypothesis: Children with oncological problems ( being
treated in Georgia) are facing psycho-social challenges and they are in need of support from a social
worker in order to meet these challenges.
Based on the research presented in the thesis, the main finding is the following: Setting a precedent
of clinical social work in Georgia would be a step towards to European medical quality standards.
