Abstract
The present paper discusses the impact of various philosophical theories on the definition of punishment and its purposes, in the practice of penology in Georgia and abroad. The concept of punishment and its purposes are analyzed from the perspective of revenge theories and utilitarian theories. We have come to the conclusion that the formation of a modern penitentiary institution in Georgia is based on a set of penal theories that are viewed positively and can help create an effective system of punishment. The aim of the paper is to analyze the essence, types and purposes of punishment from a criminal point of view. The aim of the study is to present the problem of the purpose of punishment in theory.
The paper uses dogmatic, systemic, logical and comparative-legal methods. The theoretical basis of the research is the works of Georgian scientists-lawyers on the research topic.
