Abstract
The thesis aims to study feminist activism in modern Georgia, its main achievements and
challenges from the perspective of activists themselves, based on the example of three feminist
groups and their activities (“Independent Group of Feminists”, “Women’s Gaze”, “Women’s
Movement”). The paper focuses on the main strategies of their activism and the effectiveness of
these strategies from the perspective of feminists. Furthermore, the work discusses the activists’
opinions about the societal attitudes towards the feminist activism in Georgia.
The addressed issue is very significant, as recently different topics of women’s rights in Georgia
have been actively discussed (such as sexual harassment, violence against women, the
implementation of the gender quota system in the Parliament). Following the polemics around
these issues, the importance of feminist activism in women's empowerment has been brought
to the fore.
The research has been conducted using qualitative method. The activists from the
abovementioned three feminist groups have been interviewed (9 in-depth interviews, in total)
and based on their narratives, the main strategies, achievements and challenges of feminist
activism in Georgia have been identified.
According to the analysis of in-depth interviews with the activists, despite facing various
challenges, feminist activism is gradually developing and activist groups are becoming
important agents for change.
The main challenge to feminist activism in Georgia is to enhance women's empowerment and
to spread feminist awareness in the capital, as well as in the regions. Everyone agrees that
violence against women is a problem, but this agreement is only formal and activists think that
it is necessary to move this formality to politics and weaken the oppression mechanisms.
Furthermore, an important challenge is to strengthen solidarity between the queer and
feminist movements and to accomplish the goals cooperatively.
