სულხან-საბა ორბელიანის „სიბრძნე სიცრუისას“ ინგლისური თარგმანების ტრანსლატოლოგიური ანალიზი

The current doctoral thesis presents a multilateral analysis and research of the English translations of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani’s collection of fables “the Book of Wisdom and Lies” made by Oliver Wardrop and Katharine Vivian. The research was performed based on a comparative analysis: comparing the translations with the original and with each other as well.
Review and analysis of the translations, in accordance with the linguistic theories and criteria established by the translation studies, revealed a number of problems in terms of finding equivalent lexical and phraseological units for the ones existing in the “source language”, causing changes in the messages of source text and inflicting significant damage to the translation. Furthermore, problems in terms of lexical invariants and unity of form and content have been discovered as well.
Several excisions and interpolations have been observed in both translations. In some cases, the interpolations are too biased, do not correspond to the style and content of the original and therefore make it difficult for the reader to perceive and understand the viewpoint of the author properly.
Examples of well-performed passages, observed in both translations, have also been analyzed in the thesis. However, the conducted analysis has shown that K. Vivian is more faithful to the original and more successful in transferring the style, form and content of the original in the translation.
