Abstract
Among Georgian writers of the 20th century Grigol Abashidze is one of the most decorat-ed. Abashidze is famous for his diverse, capturing and profound writing style. His talent lies in his mastering of Georgian historical novels. Abashidze’s works such as “Lasharela”, “Long Night”,“Tsotne – Rise and Fall of Georgians” are based on the writings of two historians: Zham-taaghmtsereli and Chronicler for Lasha-Giorgi. The three novels illustrate Abashidze tech-niqueas he follows the path of the historians and develops fantasy around historical realities of the past. He has deep knowledge of Georgian history and tries to blend it with the present.
As a rule, historical novels cross a path between the truth and fictional world. The research below aims to study to what degree does the author rely on historical events and facts, to what extend he draws from the past times, the epoch, thronesor heroes and whether he uses fictional altering and invention. All of Abashidze’s novels offer a fine line between the two. He draws strict boundaries: neither does he dive deep into historical peripheries nor does he cross over to fantasy. His writings offer a reader healthy struggle between a historian and writer.
My interest in the subject stems from the lack of the research around the question. And while it has attracted some attention among the researchers, the questionis not yet thoroughly examined. Major pieces are missing and the study below is trying to find and connect those ele-ments. The paper tries to contrast “The Georgian Chronicles” (“Kartlis Tskhovreba”) and the works that it collects: “Zhamtaghmtsereli” and “Chronicler for Lasha-Giorgi” with the works of Abashidze in an attempt to answer the question and lay groundwork for future research
