Abstract
Accurate communication of emotions is crucial for the participants of the communicative act to build fulfilling and successful social relationships. Therefore, a listener needs to interpret the emerging emotion correctly and adequately. Our daily actions are also driven by our emotions. We are constantly happy or sad, enjoy things, or, on the contrary, hate them. In this way, we develop attitudes towards various aspects of the social order practised in our society.
The present thesis examines the expression and perception of emotion as an element of persuasion. Therefore, it distinguishes the sociolinguistic aspects of persuasion within the discourse of public speaking.
The qualitative and quantitative research methodology was applied in this research. Therefore, the thesis includes theoretical research that proposes a complex multidisciplinary model of persuasion and its elements and a practical research experiment that confirms the theoretical knowledge presented in the thesis. 100 public speeches from Ted.com, TedX and Youtube platforms were selected for the close study. An electronic questionnaire was created for the research experiment. The selection of public speeches was made randomly.
As a result of the qualitative research conducted in the research, a schematic model of persuasion was created, which divides this process into five main stages. By developing the mentioned schematic model, the dissertation creates new knowledge which can be used by theoreticians and practitioners interested in public speaking. In addition, the issue is studied from the listener's perspective, which allows for distinguishing the role of symbolic codes employed in public speeches selected as empirical material. Respectively, two symbolic codes (of a tutor and a victim) were actualized. As a result of the quantitative research, the following questions were answered: the degree to which the listener is affected by the general emotional background regarding the decoding of the information transmitted during the public speech act and the corresponding emotional message; the extent to which the listener perceives the speaker as a bearer of a positive identity; types of attitudes (positive or negative) expressed by the listener towards the beliefs and ideas spread in the society; the extent to which the listener considers the public speaker to be a victim of popular beliefs and ideas in society and whether the general emotional background of the listener changes before and after listening to the public speech.
The answers obtained as a result of the research reveal the relevance and importance of the question for modern society. In the modern world, where expressing an opinion bears immense significance, it is necessary to know how to communicate emotions properly, be it in political discourse or public speeches. Therefore, this dissertation can serve as a guide for those who want to master public speaking skills and study the issue in more depth, both theoretically and practically.
