Abstract
Christianity in Egypt deserves interest from many points of view. Egypt is one of the oldest Christian countries with rich literary traditions. During Islamic rule Coptic was replaced by Arabic, which led to the rise of the Arabic-Christian literature of the Copts. In addition, it is interesting that in Egypt both churches, Monophysite and Diophysite, were powerful, the latter was represented by the Alexandrian Patriarchate with its famous theological school. This was followed by Islamic influence, which created a very interesting and specific situation in Egypt. This paper discusses the following issues: the founding of the Coptic Monophysite church and the dispute with the Diophysites; the Arab conquest and spread of Islam in Egypt; the state of the Copts during the Fatimid and Mamluk period; the contribution of the Copts to Egyptian culture.
