Abstract

In Modern English there is a small group of verbs which express neither action nor state, they express the speakers attitude towards the action or state, expressed by the infinitive following them. The attitude may be: physical or mental ability, possibility, necessity, obligation, permission, supposition, probability, admonition, doubt etc. These are modal verbs. Because of their incomplete meaning they are never used independently, they are always used with the infinitive (without the particle “to” ) and form the compound modal predicate serving as a semi- auxiliary verb. Modal verbs are at the same time defective because of lacking some grammatical forms, which a verb must have. This lacking comes from the historical development of the preterit- present verbs, from which the modal verbs are originated. That is why in the workmodal verbs are discussed in the synchronic and diachronic aspects. On the basis of comparison of the original and translated literature we found the means of rendering the modal verbs in Georgian.
