Thereby, the question of rethinking the content and tasks of the professional training of designers in higher education (the introduction of project-based learning, the development of specific design thinking among students, the transition to problem-based learning, etc.) is of particular relevance. In the article, design is considered a special type of project activity, one of the main parts of which is artistic and design creativity. The article discusses the possibilities of design training for design students in higher education institutions. The author's experience of project-based learning in design education is presented. A model of the development process for future designers has been developed. In the working process, we combined academic and pragmatic knowledge, maintaining an appropriate balance at each stage. It is shown that the active use of various methods of design technology and heuristics is an important part of the methodological complex aimed at developing the artistic and design competence of students. The development of methods of educational technologies based on the latest theoretical and innovative design tools, as well as design education, is discussed. It is shown that when working on a project (design object), the student thoughtfully and creatively uses the knowledge already obtained in the educational process, which allows them to achieve high-quality results in a short time when solving a design problem. The paper uses a cultural approach that considers education as an integral part of the culture; a technological approach, which considers the „method of projects“ as one of the effective educational technologies; empirical research methods; pedagogical observation, analysis of students' educational activities; pedagogical experiment; and heuristic methods.
